Yesterday, when I was working with Alice, we were going over her vocabulary - which included a lot of big words, mind you, for a 13-year-old, but whatever - we came across double-entendre. Which you know, n: a word or phrase that has two meanings or interpretations. The part that was left out of their literally PG-13 definition was that it’s usually risque. So here I am trying desperately...

This Is My Father
When asked how he took on the task of writing about his father, Jonathan Lethem said something like, I only wrote about the man in the photograph. I think that made it easier. Which, granted, may not be the most quotable thing anyone has ever said in the history of the world, but it stuck with me. I mean, come on. I went to a discussion/reading about fathers; I’m going to start thinking...

thinking conveniently
I’d like to think that the mother of the girl I used to tutor in college is asking me to help out while she looks for a new tutor this semester because I was the best EVAR and not because I’m the only one still around… after all this time…

all the live long day...
You know what I automatically think of when my heater clanks on? The Transcontinental Railroad. I imagine this is what it must have sounded like in their heads, all day, every day as they were slaving away at the rails. Do you think my landlady will do something about the horrible noise if I tell her that the sounds make me think about all the Chinese people who were brought over here to work in...

the cycle of doom
the longer this day drags on with not much progress in the celebrating new year’s department, and without coffee, or the filters with which i need to brew my own coffee, or any food, like at all, the faster my inner cycle of grumpiness and doom spins. i love how every year, i spend the new year’s eve in the most terrible angst and gloom. i like to think of it as my weepy self giving...

No Mel Gibson Jokes Here
The men, on average, responded genitally in what Chivers terms “category specific” ways. Males who identified themselves as straight swelled while gazing at heterosexual or lesbian sex and while watching the masturbating and exercising women. They were mostly unmoved when the screen displayed only men. Gay males were aroused in the opposite categorical pattern. Any expectation that the animal sex...

MTA FAIL = ANGRY RANT
I read in the New York Times a while back that officially, the MTA calls it a delay when a train is running 4 (or 6?) minutes late. So by their own standards, there are delays ALL THE TIME. But not all of them gets posted as a service advisory or an alert. Obviously, it makes sense not to blitz people about trains that are only 4 or 5 minutes late, but how delayed must a train be in order for it...

DREAM ANALYSIS
do you ever dream about getting into a fight with one of your friends that doesn’t get resolved by the time you wake up and when you do wake up, you find that you’re still harboring a twinge of resentment towards that friend - if you’re self-aware enough to realize it - or find yourself being short with them or snippety or reserved and not quite know why until you suddenly...

this will be my only post of the day, just you...
For me, I think the worst part about being sleepy is when your eyes just really want to be closed but you are putting up a hell of a fight to keep that from happening and thus your eyes are shaking like crazy in their sockets and in the end, you wind up having these “prolonged blinks” anyway. Oy. Definitely not prepared to be back in the office today. Although the good news is between...

do you ever feel like you’ve stalked someone so much on the internet that it seems inevitable that you will meet them in real life real soon, as if you willed it into action and then when it happens you are at a complete loss for what to say because you already know so many things about them that you really should not know and so you’re all quiet and don’t leave a good...

A first look at “Brief Interviews With Hideous Men” - John Krasinski’s writing and directorial debut, premiering at Sundance! Hm. Looks interesting. It’s been so long since I followed JKras - or anyone, really* - I barely know what to do! But this is exciting!  (via givememyremote.com) *Can we, just for a second, imagine what my internet presence would be like again,...
