What books should I read?

Now that I have all the free time in the world!

I love Cappuccino Sandwich for its simple message: drink coffee, read books.

Aggghhh I love this so much! I would so totally do this except my versions would be cups of things on top of social work articles. And that appeals to no one.

The to sell or donate pile. Three or four trips, you think? I might go through these again in case I made a bad judgment call.

Oh come on, you saw this coming the minute I said I was reorganizing my shelves.

I’ve been rereading this children’s chapter book by Sydney Taylor called “All-of-a-Kind-Family.” I read it with my class in elementary school and often thought about trying to find it but never really did. I just remembered that it was about this large Jewish family living in the Lower East Side at the turn of the century and remembering a scene in which the kids went to the store and got a bagful of candy for just a penny, and not understanding inflation or much of anything at the time, I was all like, WOW! I’d be rich if I lived in 1912!
Anyway, I don’t know why I didn’t think to do this earlier, but I simply googled “children’s book jewish family new york” and lo! (Also: you should read this thing on Jezebel.) This book is lovely. Not without flaws, but I’m totally in it for the nostalgia.
Also, those are my knees. HAYYYY. It’s super dark in here, because it’s almost 2am, and that is why I look orange. Just in case you were wondering.

Now this is how you write a book inscription to a friend. Well done Iain Cooper where ever you are. [click picture to read]

It’s not that I won’t buy a used copy of a book if it doesn’t have an inscription or some sort of personal marking somewhere within the pages, but if it does, then I will never not buy it.

Right now I’m lying in bed, 27 pages into Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine and all I can think about is how much I enjoy the way it smells. It is a little gross, I guess because who knows where this book has been, what past schoolchildren have done with it. Because this is the edition that schools would get if you had to read this book for class - the Bantam edition. I don’t know what it is about these Bantam books that make them smell this way. Is it a Bantam printing press thing? Is it just a library book thing?
When I remember to, I’m going to hunt down all the Bantam books I have and see if they smell the same. Do all Penguin books smell the same? What about Harper?
Hm. To be continued..
